Install & Navigate the Windows App

Install ChatGPT from an official source, recognise the new and Classic desktop apps, sign in safely, inspect the workspace and grant only the permissions your task requires.

Learning Objectives

1

Install safely

Use an official OpenAI or Microsoft-controlled installation route and avoid imitation installers.

2

Recognise the app

Distinguish the new ChatGPT desktop app from ChatGPT Classic during the transition.

3

Verify identity

Sign in with the intended account method and confirm the correct workspace.

4

Navigate responsibly

Find Chat, Work, Codex and settings where available without granting unnecessary access.

Before You Install

A two-minute preparation check prevents most account, policy and duplicate-app confusion.

🪟 Check Windows

  • Install current Windows security updates.
  • Use a trusted Windows account.
  • Confirm that installing software is permitted.

👤 Check your ChatGPT identity

  • Know the email or original sign-in method.
  • Know whether the task belongs in a personal or managed workspace.
  • Do not share passwords or one-time codes.

🏢 Check management policy

  • Work or school devices may block Microsoft Store downloads.
  • Ask IT to deploy the approved app if required.
  • Do not bypass organisation controls.

Avoid unofficial downloads

Do not install ChatGPT from advertisements, file-sharing sites, third-party “download” pages, unofficial package files or links sent by unknown people. Begin from OpenAI’s official ChatGPT download page or an official OpenAI Help Centre instruction.

Choose the Correct Installation Path

Open the official download guidance

Go to chatgpt.com/download or OpenAI’s current desktop-app migration article. Select Windows only from that trusted route.

Review what is already installed

If you previously used Codex, update it normally; OpenAI says it can become the new ChatGPT desktop app. If you used the earlier ChatGPT app, follow its migration prompt.

Allow supported coexistence

The new ChatGPT app and ChatGPT Classic may both appear during the transition. Do not delete Classic until you have confirmed which features and managed-workspace requirements you still need.

Complete the trusted installer

Review the app name and publisher shown by Windows or Microsoft Store. Stop if the publisher or destination looks unexpected.

Open the app and sign in

Use the same sign-in method associated with your intended ChatGPT account—such as email, Google, Microsoft, Apple or organisation SSO.

Confirm the workspace before working

Open the account menu and select the correct personal or managed workspace. Chats and entitlements can look missing when the wrong account or workspace is active.

Administrator-managed installation

Microsoft Store availability follows your organisation’s Windows policies. Enterprise or education IT teams may deploy the app using their approved device-management process. OpenAI also documents a winget method for managed deployments; ordinary learners should not run administrative commands unless authorised.

Tour the Current Desktop Experience

The exact layout can change. Learn the purpose of each area rather than memorising one screenshot.

Quick Chat

Starts the familiar conversational Chat experience for questions, explanations and brainstorming.

Work and Codex switcher

Where available, choose Work for research and finished deliverables or Codex for software development. Access depends on plan and workspace.

Sidebar and projects

Locate previous conversations, Projects, local folders or task history appropriate to the active experience.

Composer and attachments

Describe the outcome, add only authorised files and review which workspace or local folder the task can use.

Browser and tools

Work or Codex may offer a built-in browser and other tools. Website permissions and browser state are separate from your normal browser.

Account and settings

Confirm identity, workspace, appearance, application settings, permissions, updates and data controls before troubleshooting.

When your screen looks different

  1. Check whether the title says ChatGPT or ChatGPT Classic.
  2. Check the active account and workspace.
  3. Check for an update prompt.
  4. Check whether your plan or workspace includes Work or Codex.
  5. Consult current OpenAI release notes before assuming the installation failed.

Grant Permissions One Purpose at a Time

Files and folders

Grant access only to the authorised folder needed for the task. Avoid broad access to Documents, OneDrive or an entire drive when one project folder is enough.

Camera, microphone and screenshots

Allow these only when the activity needs them. Review the visible frame and background before capturing or sharing.

Websites and browser state

The built-in browser uses its own browser state. Enter credentials in the browser—not in Chat—and verify the active website account before approving actions.

Never provide authentication secrets in Chat

Do not paste passwords, one-time codes, recovery codes, private keys or payment-card details into a conversation. Complete sign-in inside the trusted browser or identity-provider window.

Update and Recovery Order

Use the least disruptive action first. Resetting or reinstalling should not be your first response.

Record the exact symptom

Note the app name, current experience, error message, date and whether ordinary Chat still works on the web.

Check account, workspace and status

Verify identity and workspace, then check the official OpenAI status page for a current incident.

Update through the supported route

Follow the app’s update prompt, its current settings option or your organisation’s managed update process. Restart the app after the update.

Sign out only when appropriate

If the problem is account-related, confirm you know the original sign-in method before signing out.

Repair or reset only after preserving evidence

Windows repair or reset can remove local app state and require another sign-in. Record local task locations and ask IT where necessary.

Choose your current situation to generate the safest next steps.

Your safe installation plan will appear here.

Practical Activity: Verify Your Installation

Complete the checks that apply. If installation is blocked by policy, recording the IT request counts as the correct action.

0 of 10 checks completed.

Successful result

The app opens from a trusted installation, the intended account and workspace are active, a test Chat works, optional experiences are correctly identified, and no unnecessary permission has been granted.

Quick Knowledge Check

Answer all five questions and review the explanations.

1. What is the safest starting point for installing ChatGPT on Windows?
2. Why might both ChatGPT and ChatGPT Classic appear?
3. What should a learner on a managed work computer do if Microsoft Store installation is blocked?
4. Which permission approach is best?
5. What should be checked before concluding that Work or Codex installation failed?

Key Takeaways

Official route only

Start from OpenAI’s download or migration guidance and respect Microsoft or organisation controls.

Verify before deleting

ChatGPT and ChatGPT Classic can coexist. Confirm what each app contains before removing anything.

Least permission

Installation does not require automatic access to every local file, device or website account.
