ITIAN Basic Computer Skills Course
Technology Simplified — Solutions That Work
Internet and Web Browsing
Browse the web, search effectively, use tabs and bookmarks, download carefully and recognise the address of the website you are visiting.
By the end of this lesson, you can…
- Explain the difference between the internet, web, browser and search engine.
- Use the address bar and search terms effectively.
- Open, close and switch browser tabs.
- Check a website address before entering information or downloading.
Before you begin
What you need
- A computer connected to the internet.
- A current browser such as Microsoft Edge, Chrome or Firefox.
- A list of safe practice searches.
Safe practice
Use a practice account and non-sensitive information. Ask the computer owner before changing settings, installing software or sharing files.
Understand and practise the skill
The internet connects devices and services; the web is one service reached through a browser. The address bar shows where you are. Search results are suggestions, not guarantees, so pause and inspect the website address.
Key terms
Browser
An application used to view websites.
Address bar
The field displaying the current website address and accepting searches.
Search engine
A service that finds web pages matching search terms.
Tab
A separate webpage open inside the same browser window.
Follow the demonstration
- Open the browser. Identify Back, Forward, Refresh and the address bar.
- Visit a known address. Type a complete trusted address and check the domain.
- Search with useful words. Use a specific topic and location instead of a full vague question.
- Manage tabs and favourites. Open a result in a new tab, switch tabs and save a trusted page.
- Download cautiously. Confirm the source, filename and destination before opening a download.
Worked example
Safer browsing pause
1. Read the full website address
2. Check the organisation or sender
3. Look for unexpected spelling
4. Do not ignore browser warnings
5. Download only when the source is trusted
Complete the guided activity
Repeat the demonstration using the safe practice items and tick each completed result.
Check your understanding
Review, reflect and continue
Success criteria
- The learner can navigate using browser controls and tabs.
- Search terms are specific and useful.
- Website addresses and downloads are checked before use.
Reflection prompt
What can you now do independently, and which step would you like to practise once more?
