Lesson 2 – Creating Your Facebook Account
Lesson Objective
By the end of this lesson you will have your own Facebook account and understand the information required to keep it secure.
Creating a Facebook Account
- Open your internet browser.
- Go to www.facebook.com
- Select Create New Account.
- Enter your first and last name.
- Enter your date of birth.
- Select your gender.
- Enter your mobile number or email address.
- Create a strong password.
- Select Sign Up.
Choosing a Good Password
Never use simple passwords such as:
- 123456
- password
- your birthday
- your pet’s name
Instead create a password containing:
- Uppercase letters
- Lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Symbols
- 12–16 characters long
Never give your Facebook password to anyone. Facebook staff will NEVER ask for your password.
Verifying Your Account
Facebook will usually send either:
- A text message
- An email verification code
Enter the verification code when requested.
Adding Your Profile Picture
Choose a clear photograph of yourself. For business owners a professional portrait works best. Avoid:
- Blurry photos
- Pictures taken too far away
- Group photographs
- Offensive images
Complete Your Basic Profile
Add:
- Your town or city.
- Your occupation.
- Your interests.
- Your education if you wish.
- A short introduction.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Using a weak password.
- Accepting every friend request.
- Sharing personal information publicly.
- Ignoring privacy settings.
- Not enabling two-factor authentication.
