ITIAN Basic Computer Skills Course
Technology Simplified — Solutions That Work
Backups and Simple Troubleshooting
Protect important files, diagnose common problems calmly and complete an everyday computer project that proves your new skills.
By the end of this lesson, you can…
- Explain the difference between syncing and a separate backup.
- Check whether important folders are protected.
- Use a safe step-by-step troubleshooting method.
- Complete and present an everyday computer confidence project.
Before you begin
What you need
- The files created during the course.
- An external drive or supervised cloud backup option.
- A notebook or digital maintenance record.
Safe practice
Use a practice account and non-sensitive information. Ask the computer owner before changing settings, installing software or sharing files.
Understand and practise the skill
Troubleshooting works best when you identify one problem, protect the work and change one thing at a time. Backups reduce the cost of mistakes and device failure.
Key terms
Backup
A recoverable copy stored separately from the working files.
Sync
Automatic matching of changes between connected locations or devices.
Restart
A controlled shutdown and start that can clear temporary problems.
Troubleshooting
A method for identifying the cause of a problem through safe checks.
Follow the demonstration
- Describe the problem. Record what you expected, what happened and any exact message.
- Protect the work. Save open files and confirm a backup before risky changes.
- Check simple causes. Review power, Wi-Fi, cables, volume, storage and the selected account.
- Restart safely. Close work and restart the affected app or computer when appropriate.
- Test and record. Repeat the original task and note what fixed the problem or who to contact.
Worked example
Final confidence project
1. Create a clearly named course folder
2. Write and format a one-page document
3. Save editable and PDF copies
4. Email the PDF to a safe practice recipient
5. Verify the file is backed up
6. Explain the safety checks used
Complete the guided activity
Repeat the demonstration using the safe practice items and tick each completed result.
Check your understanding
Review, reflect and continue
Success criteria
- Important files have a confirmed protection method.
- The learner troubleshoots in a calm repeatable order.
- The final project demonstrates practical independent computer use.
Reflection prompt
What can you now do independently, and which step would you like to practise once more?
