Safe Installation
Install the official mobile app
Open your phone’s app store
Use the Apple App Store on iPhone or Google Play Store on Android.
Search for OpenAI ChatGPT
Confirm that the app is published by OpenAI. Avoid look-alike apps, unofficial APK files and links from unknown websites.
Install and open the app
You can also begin from OpenAI’s official download page, which links to the correct iOS and Android stores.
Sign in with the correct account
Use the same OpenAI account and workspace as your Windows or web session. This is what allows ordinary Chat history to appear across devices.
Mobile Interface
Learn the main controls
Mobile Strengths
Use the phone for what it does best
Voice Conversations
Speak, listen, type and attach images in one chat
Voice is available to logged-in users in the ChatGPT iOS and Android apps. Depending on your plan, region and app version, Settings → Voice may show options such as Live, Advanced or Standard.
Select the Voice icon
Find it in the message bar and allow microphone access when your phone asks.
Choose a voice if prompted
Select the voice that is easiest and most comfortable for you to understand.
Begin speaking
Ask one clear question at a time. You can mute, type, attach an available image or end the conversation using the controls shown.
Review the transcript
Voice works inside a chat, so you can return to the written conversation and continue later.
Photographs and Screen Sharing
Give ChatGPT useful visual context—not unrestricted access
| Mobile input | Useful example | Privacy check |
|---|---|---|
| Upload a photograph | Ask for composition feedback on a NZTHRILLVIBES landscape image. | Check the frame for people, number plates, addresses and private documents. |
| Take a new photograph | Identify a visible setting, sign, cable or interface problem. | Grant camera access only when needed and review what is visible before sending. |
| Live video in supported Voice | Show an object or changing scene while asking questions. | Stop video as soon as the useful demonstration ends. |
| Screen sharing in supported Voice | Get guidance through a phone setting or app interface. | Close banking, email, messages, passwords and notifications first. Stop sharing before opening another app. |
Current OpenAI guidance says video and screen sharing may require an eligible subscription and the Advanced Voice option; Live Voice does not initially support them. Follow the controls your account actually displays.
Across Your Devices
Use mobile as the capture and review layer
- Start or open an ordinary Chat on your phone.
- Record the idea, photograph or field note while it is convenient.
- Rename the chat clearly so it is easy to search.
- On Windows or web, sign into the same account and workspace.
- Open the same chat and turn the idea into a document, webpage or project plan.
- Return to mobile later for review or follow-up questions.
Recommended Mobile Setup
Review these settings before daily use
- Account and workspace: confirm you are using the intended identity.
- App updates: keep the official app current through your phone’s store.
- Microphone and camera: enable only the permissions you use.
- Photos: prefer selected-photo access if your phone offers it.
- Voice: choose a comfortable voice and review background-conversation settings.
- Notifications: allow only useful alerts and protect previews on the lock screen.
- Personalisation: check Memory, Custom Instructions and Personality.
- Data Controls: review how ordinary chats may be used and know where Temporary Chat is available.

Quick Troubleshooting
Fix common mobile-app problems
My PC conversations are missing
Check the active OpenAI account and workspace, then use history search with an exact phrase. Temporary Chats and some desktop-hosted Work or Codex tasks follow different rules.
Voice cannot hear me
Check microphone permission in your phone’s Settings, confirm the microphone is not muted, close other recording apps and restart ChatGPT.
I cannot see video or screen sharing
These features depend on the Voice option, plan, region and app version. Update the app and check Settings → Voice; use a photograph or typed description when the feature is unavailable.
The app-store subscription is missing
Sign into the original ChatGPT account used for the purchase. Reinstalling does not transfer a subscription between ChatGPT accounts.
The app is slow or unresponsive
Check the internet connection, force-close and reopen the app, install updates, restart the phone and check OpenAI Status if the problem affects multiple features.
