Build Your Personal AI Profile
Create a short, safe working brief that tells ChatGPT what you are trying to achieve, how you prefer to learn and what a useful response looks like—without sharing details it does not need.

- Interactive profile builder
- 4-question check
Learning Objectives
What you will learn
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Explain what a Personal AI Profile is and what it is not.
- Identify useful goals, context, preferences and boundaries to include.
- Leave out sensitive or unnecessary personal information.
- Generate a concise profile with the interactive builder.
- Test the profile in a normal chat and improve it from the result.
- Choose whether to use the profile in a prompt, Project or Custom Instructions.
The Big Idea
A working brief, not a digital identity
Your Personal AI Profile is a short set of useful instructions you control. It helps ChatGPT adapt its explanations and outputs, but it does not guarantee correctness and should not contain secrets.
Keep it useful and minimal
Include stable information that changes how the work should be done: your main goals, general experience, audience, preferred tone, useful formats and checking rules.
Do not create a personal-data file
Leave out passwords, financial details, identity numbers, private health information, confidential client material, exact home address and anything unrelated to the help you want.
Profile Parts
Six details that improve the working relationship
Your role and context
Describe what you do in general terms, such as learner, photographer, business owner or website manager.
Your goals
Name the outcomes you are working towards and which types of task matter most.
Your experience
State your approximate skill level so explanations start at the right place.
Your audience
Explain who will read or use the result, including their needs and knowledge level.
Your response style
Choose language, tone, length, formatting and whether you want steps, examples or checklists.
Your boundaries
Tell ChatGPT what to verify, what to ask before changing and what it must not assume.
Interactive Builder
Create your Personal AI Profile
Enter only information you are comfortable using in ChatGPT. This form does not save your answers in browser storage; copy the result somewhere you control if you want to keep it.
Your generated profile
Example Profile
Short enough to use, specific enough to help
PERSONAL AI PROFILE My context: I am a small-business owner, photographer and developing technology learner. My goals: Build accessible websites, improve my photography and use AI confidently for practical work. My experience: Developing confidence. Explain unfamiliar terms in plain language. My audience: New Zealand beginners, students and small organisations. How to respond: Use warm, professional New Zealand English. Give numbered steps, complete examples and practical checklists. Lead with the outcome. Working boundaries: State important assumptions. Verify current or high-stakes facts. Ask before making major changes. Point out privacy, accessibility or publishing risks. If my request conflicts with this profile, follow my latest request.
Your latest request still matters
A profile is background guidance, not an unbreakable rule. State any special requirement in the current prompt, especially when the task needs a different tone, audience or format.
Where to Use It
Choose the smallest useful scope
Do not automatically make every preference global. Put guidance where it belongs.
| Location | Use it when | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Start of one chat | The profile or task applies only to this conversation. | Paste the relevant parts, not necessarily the whole profile. |
| Project instructions | The guidance belongs to one continuing Project. | Project instructions apply inside that Project and can override global Custom Instructions. |
| Custom Instructions | The guidance should influence all new chats. | Use only stable, broadly useful preferences. The next lesson covers setup and review. |
| Saved memory | A stable detail is worth remembering between conversations. | Memory is managed separately and may change as ChatGPT learns from conversations. |
| Temporary Chat | You do not want the conversation to use or create memory. | Current official guidance says enabled Custom Instructions can still apply in Temporary Chat. |
Test and Improve
A profile improves through use
Run a simple test
Paste the profile into a new chat and ask for a short task you understand well.
Review the result
Check whether the depth, tone, format and assumptions matched what you wanted.
Correct one thing
Change a vague statement into a specific instruction, then repeat the same test.
Remove clutter
Delete preferences that never affect useful results or conflict with many tasks.
Review regularly
Update goals, skill level and audience when your work changes.
Verify the work
Personalisation improves relevance, but it does not make every answer accurate.
Practical Activity
Complete your profile review
Tick each step when complete. Checklist progress is saved in this browser, but the profile-builder answers are not.
Privacy and Control
Keep personalisation under your control
Minimum useful detail
Describe the work without exposing your full identity. “Small-business owner” is often enough.
Review before saving globally
Custom Instructions apply broadly. Save only guidance that should influence most new chats.
Check Memory separately
Custom Instructions and memory are different controls. Review both in Personalization settings.
Temporary Chat has limits
It does not use or create memory, but enabled Custom Instructions can still guide the conversation.
Remove information everywhere
Deleting one chat may not remove the same detail from saved memory, instructions, files or other chats.
Accuracy still comes first
Always check important advice, facts and decisions. A personalised error is still an error.
Knowledge Check
Check your understanding
Select one answer for each question.
