The Key Principle
Your account connects the experience
For ordinary Chat conversations, the important ingredient is your OpenAI account. When you sign into ChatGPT on another supported device with the same account, your Chat conversations can appear there so you can open one and continue where you left off.
Plan and capture ideas
Your conversation history
Create and refine
Step One
Confirm that every device uses the same account
Using different accounts is the most common reason a conversation appears to be missing. An account made with an email address can be separate from one created using “Continue with Google”, Apple or Microsoft—even when the addresses look similar.
Check your phone
Open ChatGPT, open the sidebar or account menu, then note the active email address and workspace.
Check the Windows app
Open the account menu and compare the active account and workspace with your phone.
Check the browser
Visit chatgpt.com, open the account menu and verify the same details.
Step Two
Open and continue the exact conversation
- On your phone, open an ordinary Chat conversation you want to continue.
- Send a memorable message such as “Cross-device test for my ITIAN course.”
- Wait a moment, then open ChatGPT on your Windows PC or in your browser.
- Find the conversation in the sidebar. If needed, use conversation search and enter an exact phrase from the chat.
- Open the result, confirm your phone message is visible, and reply from the PC.
- Return to your phone and confirm the PC reply appears in the same conversation.
OpenAI’s current help guidance says history search can match keywords in conversation titles and content. On desktop, Ctrl + K opens search; using a distinctive exact phrase makes the conversation easier to find.
Important Boundaries
What may not appear everywhere
| Conversation type | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Chat conversation | Designed to appear in Chat history across the web and supported apps when you use the same account. |
| Temporary Chat | Does not appear in your history. Use ordinary Chat for work you want to find and continue later. |
| Different OpenAI account | Chats, memory, files and settings remain separate. Account switching does not merge histories. |
| Different workspace | Personal and managed workspace content can be separated even within the same sign-in. |
| Local desktop Work or Codex thread | May remain on the computer where it was created rather than appearing as an ordinary cloud Chat. |
| Deleted chat | Deletion is not an archive or a sync action; do not delete work you still need. |

Quick Troubleshooting
If the conversation does not appear
1. Check the account and workspace again
Compare the active email and workspace on both devices. Histories belonging to separate accounts are not merged.
2. Confirm it was an ordinary Chat
Temporary Chats do not appear in history. Local Work or Codex threads can also have different storage behaviour from ordinary Chat.
3. Search using an exact phrase
Use a distinctive phrase from the conversation. On desktop, try Ctrl+K; on mobile, use the Search bar in the sidebar.
4. Refresh and update
Refresh the browser, restart the app and install any available update. Then allow a short time for a newly created chat to become searchable.
5. Check OpenAI status or support
If other chats are also missing, check OpenAI Status. If the problem continues, use the Help Centre support options and include the device, app version, account type and what you already tried.
