Lesson 2 – Creating Your Facebook Account

Lesson Objective

By the end of this lesson you will have your own Facebook account and understand the information required to keep it secure.

Creating a Facebook Account

  1. Open your internet browser.
  2. Go to www.facebook.com
  3. Select Create New Account.
  4. Enter your first and last name.
  5. Enter your date of birth.
  6. Select your gender.
  7. Enter your mobile number or email address.
  8. Create a strong password.
  9. Select Sign Up.

Choosing a Good Password

Never use simple passwords such as:

  • 123456
  • password
  • your birthday
  • your pet’s name

Instead create a password containing:

  • Uppercase letters
  • Lowercase letters
  • Numbers
  • Symbols
  • 12–16 characters long

Never give your Facebook password to anyone. Facebook staff will NEVER ask for your password.

Verifying Your Account

Facebook will usually send either:

  • A text message
  • An email verification code

Enter the verification code when requested.

Adding Your Profile Picture

Choose a clear photograph of yourself. For business owners a professional portrait works best. Avoid:

  • Blurry photos
  • Pictures taken too far away
  • Group photographs
  • Offensive images

Complete Your Basic Profile

Add:

  • Your town or city.
  • Your occupation.
  • Your interests.
  • Your education if you wish.
  • A short introduction.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Using a weak password.
  • Accepting every friend request.
  • Sharing personal information publicly.
  • Ignoring privacy settings.
  • Not enabling two-factor authentication.
