Module 1

Rock Fishing for Beginners

Rock fishing can be very productive, but it demands constant awareness. Start small, choose safer platforms, and put safety ahead of catching fish.

Key idea: if the conditions or the rock platform do not feel safe, the correct decision is to leave. No fish is worth the risk.

Safety checklist

Your first responsibility is to get home safely.

✓ Wear a correctly fitted lifejacket.
✓ Never fish alone.
✓ Check marine forecast, swell and tide.
✓ Watch the sea for 15–20 minutes before setting up.
✓ Choose a higher stable platform.
✓ Keep an exit route clear.
✓ Wear grippy footwear.
✓ Leave early if conditions change.
The best fishing decision may be not to fish. If the platform is being washed, the swell is too lively, or you are uneasy, leave.

Simple gear and rig

Use one reliable setup before you complicate things.

Basic tackle

A beginner setup might include a rod and reel suited to shore use, line, leader, hooks, sinkers, pliers, a small tackle container, knife and bait.

  1. Thread the sinker onto the main line.
  2. Tie the main line to a swivel.
  3. Add a leader and hook.
  4. Secure your bait firmly, keeping the hook point exposed.
  5. Pull-test every knot before casting.
Practice task: tie your rig at home several times before you try it in wind and spray.
R3

Landing fish and staying balanced

Plan the landing before the hookup.

Choose a landing spot that does not force you onto lower wet rocks. Keep your feet planted, do not rush backwards, and use a net where practical. If a snag or fish puts you in danger, abandon it.

Beginner challenge: visit a safe spot without fishing, identify the highest wet mark, and plan where you would stand, cast and land a fish.
Family learning on the coast

Fishing with family

One of the nicest things about shore and rock fishing is that it can be shared. A family photo in this module reminds beginners that fishing can be about time together as much as it is about the catch.

Choose safer conditions

When taking children or less experienced people, fish only in easy conditions and choose high, stable rock platforms with clear escape routes.
