VSD process control and PID

Apply speed control, pressure/flow/level PID, sleep/wake and multi-pump strategies.

Before you begin

Process instrument, setpoint definition and safe test conditions.

Safety: Use site procedures, approved test equipment and competent supervision. Never bypass a protection or interlock without formal control.

Step-by-step learning

  1. Scale the process feedback correctly in engineering units.
  2. Set a conservative initial PID tuning and verify controller direction.
  3. Introduce small setpoint changes and observe stability and response time.
  4. Configure limits, sleep/wake, broken-sensor and fallback behaviour.
Ian's practical tips:
  • Wrong controller direction drives the process away from setpoint—test it at low risk first.
  • Fix noisy or badly ranged feedback before trying to tune the PID.

Fault-finding questions

  • What should be happening, and what evidence proves it?
  • Where is the last known correct signal, voltage, state or process condition?
  • What changed immediately before the fault?
  • Can the system be divided into smaller testable sections?

Practical activity
