Key Concepts

AI Image Generation Overview

AI image generation tools — including Google Imagen (available in some Workspace plans), Adobe Firefly, Midjourney, DALL-E and Canva's Magic Media — can create original images from text descriptions. These tools have advanced rapidly and can now produce photo-realistic images that are difficult to distinguish from photographs. For business content, they offer opportunities but also require careful consideration.

Appropriate Uses for AI Images

Supplementary background images for posts: If you need an image for a Google Post about a service and do not have a relevant photo, AI can generate a suitable visual. Seasonal graphics: Create seasonal imagery (Christmas scenes, autumn themes) for posts without a photo shoot. Product concept images: Illustrate services or products visually when actual product photos are unavailable. Mood and atmosphere images: Generate images that convey the atmosphere or emotion of a service (e.g. a relaxing spa image for a wellness business).

When Real Photos Are Essential

AI-generated images should never replace authentic photos of your actual premises, products, team or completed work. Customers expect the photos on your profile to accurately represent your real business. Using AI images to misrepresent your premises, team quality or service results is deceptive and violates Google's content policies. Always use real photos for: your business exterior and interior, your team and staff, your actual products, before-and-after results.

Google's Policy on AI Images

Google requires photos on Google Business Profiles to be authentic and not misleading. AI-generated images used as supplementary post images are generally acceptable if they are relevant to the business and not misrepresenting actual premises or services. AI images that misrepresent your business (showing a professional office when you work from a garage, for example) violate Google's policies and can result in profile penalties.

Tools and Getting Started

Free AI image tools: Canva's Magic Media (Text to Image), Adobe Firefly (limited free), Microsoft Copilot's Image Creator (powered by DALL-E, free). Paid tools with better quality: Midjourney, Adobe Firefly full, Google Imagen. Start with Canva's built-in AI image tool for simplicity — describe what you need and generate options quickly.

Step-by-Step Practice

Access an AI image tool (start with Canva's Magic Media or Microsoft Copilot Image Creator — both free).
Generate 3 supplementary images for an upcoming Google Post — experiment with different prompts.
Assess image quality and accuracy — are the images relevant and non-misleading?
Select the best image and use it as a Google Post image.
Document your prompts and results — which prompts generated the most useful outputs?
Ian's practical tip: I have experimented with AI image generation for business content. I understand when AI images are appropriate vs when real photos are essential. I have used an AI-generated image in at least one Google Post. I understand Google's policies on AI-generated content.

Practical Activity

Complete and record this task

Always disclose or consider ethically whether using AI images is appropriate for your context. In industries where trust and authenticity are paramount — healthcare, trades, food — customers strongly prefer seeing real photos. AI images work best as supplementary content, not as replacements for genuine business photography.
