Pump types, curves and system head

Pump curve, system data and operating measurements.

Step-by-step learning

  1. Identify pump type and intended service.
  2. Plot or estimate static head and friction losses to form the system curve.
  3. Find the expected duty point on the pump curve.
  4. Compare flow, pressure, power and efficiency with the design.
Ian's practical tips:
  • A pump can be electrically healthy but hydraulically operating far from its best efficiency point.
  • Never throttle a positive-displacement pump without proper relief protection.

Fault-finding questions

  • What should be happening, and what evidence proves it?
  • Where is the last known correct signal, voltage, state or process condition?
  • What changed immediately before the fault?
  • Can the system be divided into smaller testable sections?
