Managed switches, VLANs and network design

Managed switch lab or approved configuration backup.

Safety: Use site procedures, approved test equipment and competent supervision. Never bypass a protection or interlock without formal control.

Step-by-step learning

  1. Create a management plan and back up the switch configuration first.
  2. Assign ports to documented VLANs and confirm trunk/access roles.
  3. Enable only the redundancy protocol designed for the topology.
  4. Check NTP/PTP time, link speed, errors and spanning-tree state.

  • Never enable two competing loop-prevention methods without understanding the interaction.
  • Unused ports should be disabled or assigned to a restricted VLAN.

Fault-finding questions

  • What should be happening, and what evidence proves it?
  • Where is the last known correct signal, voltage, state or process condition?
  • What changed immediately before the fault?
  • Can the system be divided into smaller testable sections?
