Key Concepts

Why Verification Is Required

Google requires businesses to verify their profile to confirm that the person managing the listing actually represents the business and that the business information is accurate. Verification prevents competitors, spammers or malicious actors from claiming, editing or removing your business listing. An unverified profile will not appear prominently in local search results and will have limited functionality.

Postcard Verification

The most common verification method is postcard verification. Google sends a postcard with a unique PIN code to your registered business address, typically within 5–14 days. When the postcard arrives, you enter the PIN in your Google Business Profile dashboard to complete verification. During this waiting period, you can still edit your profile but it will not appear fully in search results.

Other Verification Methods

Phone verification — Available for some businesses. Google calls or texts your business phone number with a verification code you enter in the dashboard.

Email verification — Available for some businesses. Google sends a verification link to your business email address.

Instant verification — Available to businesses whose website is already verified in Google Search Console. If your website domain is verified there, you may qualify for instant verification.

Video verification — Google may request a short video recording of your business premises and a government-issued ID to verify service-area businesses or in cases where other methods are unavailable.

After Verification

Once verified, your full profile becomes active and eligible to appear in Google Search and Maps. All edits you made during the waiting period will go live. Google will also give you access to insights data, the ability to respond to reviews and all other profile management features.

Step-by-Step Practice

Submit your profile for verification by selecting your preferred verification method.
If using postcard verification, confirm your exact address is correct before submitting — the postcard is sent to the address on file.
While waiting for verification, complete as much of your profile as possible — add photos, write your description, add services.
When the postcard arrives, log in to business.google.com and enter the PIN code promptly. PINs expire after 30 days.
Confirm your profile is live by searching for your business name on Google after verification.
Ian's practical tip: I understand why verification is required by Google. I know the different verification methods available. I have submitted my profile for verification. I know what to do when the verification code arrives.

Practical Activity

Complete and record this task

If your postcard PIN expires before you enter it, you can request a new postcard from the verification section of your dashboard. Keep the postcard safe — you only need the code once. If you move premises, update your address first before requesting a new verification.
