Key Concepts

Why Categories Matter So Much

Your business category is one of the most powerful ranking signals in Google Business Profile. It tells Google exactly what type of business you are and determines which searches your profile is eligible to appear for. Choosing the wrong primary category — or failing to add relevant secondary categories — is one of the most common and damaging mistakes businesses make.

Primary Category

Your primary category is the single most important category selection. It should describe your core business as specifically as possible. For example, if you run a pizza restaurant, "Pizza restaurant" is better than the broader "Restaurant". If you run a general dental practice, "Dentist" is correct. If you specialise in cosmetic dentistry, "Cosmetic dentist" may rank better for your target searches.

Secondary Categories

You can add up to 9 additional secondary categories to describe other aspects of your business. These help your profile appear for a wider range of relevant searches. For example, a plumber might add: Plumber (primary), Drainage service, Gas installation service, Heating contractor, Emergency plumber. Each secondary category opens up additional search queries your profile can rank for.

Category Strategy

Research your top competitors and note which primary categories they use. Use tools like PlePer Category Tool (pleper.com) to search the full list of available Google Business categories — there are thousands. Always choose the most specific, accurate category available rather than a broad parent category. Only add categories that genuinely reflect your business — adding irrelevant categories can harm your rankings.

Updating Categories

Categories can be changed at any time in your profile settings. If you launch a new service line or change your business focus, update your categories to reflect this. Note that major category changes may temporarily affect your rankings as Google recalibrates your profile's relevance.

Step-by-Step Practice

Log in to Google Business Profile and navigate to your profile's Info or Edit section.
Review your current primary category — is it the most specific and accurate description of your core business?
Research available categories using the search field in the category selector or visit pleper.com/tools/local-search-tools/gbp-categories/
Add up to 9 relevant secondary categories that describe other services or specialties your business offers.
Save changes and wait 24–48 hours to observe any impact on your search visibility.
Ian's practical tip: I understand why primary category selection is critical for ranking. I have reviewed and updated my primary category. I have added relevant secondary categories. I understand the category guidelines and avoided irrelevant categories.

Practical Activity

Complete and record this task

Do not add categories just to appear in more searches — only add categories that genuinely reflect services you actually offer. Google regularly audits profile categories and can suspend listings that appear to be gaming the system with irrelevant categories.
