Key Concepts

How Q&A Works on Google Business Profile

The Questions and Answers (Q&A) section appears on your Google Business Profile and allows anyone — customers, the public, even competitors — to post questions about your business. Anyone can also answer those questions, not just the business owner. This makes proactive management of the Q&A section essential.

Proactive Questions — The Best Strategy

Rather than waiting for customers to ask questions, the most effective strategy is to post the most frequently asked questions yourself and provide thorough, accurate answers. Log in to your profile and ask the question as a customer would, then switch to your Business Manager account to answer it. This way, customers see the right information immediately without waiting.

What to Cover in Your Q&A

Think about the questions your customers ask most often by phone or email: Do you offer emergency services? Is parking available? Do you accept credit cards? What areas do you service? Are you pet-friendly? What are your prices? Each question you pre-populate is a piece of information that helps a customer make a decision without needing to contact you, reducing barriers to conversion.

SEO Value of Q&A

Q&A content is indexed by Google and can contribute to your profile's relevance for keyword searches. A well-populated Q&A section that includes relevant keywords and phrases can help your profile appear for more specific search queries. Think of each Q&A as a mini piece of SEO content.

Monitoring and Managing Q&A

Enable notifications for your Google Business Profile so you are alerted when anyone posts a new question or answer. Respond to all customer questions promptly and professionally. If someone posts a misleading or inaccurate answer, post the correct information yourself and flag the incorrect answer for removal. You cannot delete answers, but you can report inappropriate content to Google.

Step-by-Step Practice

Navigate to your Google Business Profile and view the existing Q&A section.
Write 10 frequently asked questions that customers regularly ask your business by phone or in person.
Post each question from a customer-facing Google account and answer each one thoroughly from your Business Manager account.
Enable notifications in your profile settings so you receive alerts for new questions.
Monitor Q&A weekly and respond to any new customer questions within 24 hours.
Ian's practical tip: I have posted at least 10 proactive Q&A entries on my profile. My answers are thorough, accurate and include relevant keywords. I have enabled notifications for new Q&A activity. I know how to monitor and manage customer-posted questions.

Practical Activity

Complete and record this task

Include your keywords naturally in your Q&A answers. If you are a Wellington plumber, your answer to 'Do you cover the Hutt Valley?' should include phrases like 'Wellington plumbing services extending to Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt' — not just 'Yes'. This adds local keyword content to your profile.
