Key Concepts

The Power of the Cover Photo

Your cover photo is the most prominently displayed image on your Google Business Profile and one of the first things customers see. It sets the visual tone for your entire profile and can immediately communicate whether your business looks professional, welcoming and trustworthy. A great cover photo can significantly increase the number of people who engage with your profile rather than scrolling past.

What Makes a Great Cover Photo

The best cover photos are: high resolution and sharp, well-lit (preferably with natural light), representative of your business's core offering, professionally composed, and emotionally engaging. For a restaurant, this might be your most visually appealing dish. For a landscaping company, a stunning before-and-after garden transformation. For a professional services firm, a welcoming image of your team or office. Choose an image that makes customers think "I want that" or "I want to go there".

Technical Requirements

Upload your cover photo at a minimum of 1080x608 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio). This ensures the image displays correctly without cropping or stretching. Save as a high-quality JPG with minimal compression. The file size should be under 5 MB. Note that Google may not always use your chosen cover photo as the primary displayed image — it may show an automatically selected photo if Google's algorithm determines another photo is more engaging.

Seasonal and Promotional Cover Photos

Update your cover photo to reflect seasons, major promotions or events. A florist might change their cover photo to show Valentine's Day arrangements in February and Christmas wreaths in December. These timely updates signal to Google that your profile is actively maintained, which contributes to engagement signals, and they also show customers that your business is current and active.

Step-by-Step Practice

Select your best existing photo that represents your business at its best.
Resize it to 1080x608px using an image editor — crop to the 16:9 ratio if necessary.
Upload it as the cover photo in the Photos section of your profile.
View your profile as a customer and assess the first impression the cover photo creates.
Schedule a reminder to update your cover photo at least seasonally — 4 times per year minimum.
Ian's practical tip: I have selected and uploaded an effective cover photo. The cover photo is at 1080x608px with high quality. The cover photo creates a strong positive first impression. I have a plan to update the cover photo seasonally.

Practical Activity

Complete and record this task

If you have not had a professional photo taken of your business, do it now. A professional photographer's session for a small business typically costs – and produces cover photo quality images that will serve you for years. The return on investment from better photos is substantial.
