Key Concepts

What Are Fake or Policy-Violating Reviews?

Not all negative reviews are fake, and not all fake reviews are negative. Policy-violating reviews include: reviews from people who never interacted with your business, reviews from competitors posing as customers, spam reviews (often promotional or gibberish), reviews that contain hate speech, illegal content or personal attacks, and reviews from current or former employees about internal work matters (which should not appear as customer reviews).

What Google Will Remove

Google will remove reviews that violate its content policies. This includes: spam and fake reviews, reviews containing off-topic content, reviews with promotional content for other businesses, reviews containing hate speech, violence, or sexually explicit content, reviews that reveal personally identifiable information, and reviews that appear to be from someone who never interacted with the business.

What Google Will NOT Remove

Google will generally not remove reviews simply because the business owner disagrees with them or believes them to be unfair. A genuine customer leaving a negative review about a real experience — even if the business believes that experience is exaggerated — does not constitute a policy violation. Google's review system is designed to reflect real customer experiences, including negative ones.

How to Report a Fake Review

To flag a review: go to your Google Business Profile, find the review, click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to the review, and select "Flag as inappropriate". You will be asked to select the reason the review violates policy. Complete the process and submit your report. Google reviews all flagged content, but the process can take days to weeks.

Escalating Unresolved Cases

If a clearly policy-violating review is not removed after flagging, you can escalate through the Google Business Profile support page, contact Google Business Profile support directly, or use the Google Small Business community forum to seek assistance. Legal options may also be available in extreme cases of defamation.

Step-by-Step Practice

Review all current negative reviews — do any appear to be from people who never actually used your business?
Check the reviewer profiles — fake review accounts often have no profile photo, no other reviews, or a history of only 1-star reviews across many businesses.
Flag any policy-violating reviews using the three-dot menu on each review.
Respond professionally to suspected fake reviews while awaiting Google's decision.
Document flagged reviews — record the date flagged, reason, and outcome for your records.
Ian's practical tip: I can identify reviews that violate Google's content policies. I know how to flag policy-violating reviews correctly. I have responded professionally to any suspected fake reviews. I have documented flagged reviews for tracking purposes.

Practical Activity

Complete and record this task

While waiting for a fake review to be removed (which can take weeks), post a professional public response stating that you cannot find a record of this customer's interaction and invite them to contact you directly. This shows future customers that the review may be questionable without making accusations.
